If I Had Wings
Sonnet
If I had wings of white and wispy vane,
Conceived on high by radiant sunshine.
If I had strength to move the empty vein
And give it life to pulse with light so fine.
If all my pain would drift away at night
To sit in shadow while the moon is clear.
My mind asleep as dreams slip past the bright,
I’d dream of fields that shine. Without a fear.
Such fear of sight or taste or touch that blinds
Any who seek the pleasure of deep sleep.
And while all these things of the dark do bind,
Consumed by those who choose to seek the deep.
To hell and back burdened with love I fly,
If but to see your shape in the night sky.
